We’ve all heard the saying that heart attacks are the silent killers. Well, let’s take one step backwards and say that stress can lead to a long line of health and efficiency killers to include:
* Excessive absenteeism
* Disruptions in the workplace
* High employee turnover
* Job related accidents
* Loss of overall productivity
* High rate of absences due to medical related problems
Stress is a part of our normal lives. How we manage stress in the workplace is critical. It is very important for managers to recognize the signs of stress in themselves and in others. Numerous management articles cite stress as the #1 health problem in America.
Workplace stress is associated with increased workloads/hours,
management and leadership styles and unresolved personal issues. Individuals often feel a sense of helplessness because they are overwhelmed.
How do we eliminate or reduce stress in the workplace?
Supportive management is the starting point along with these helpful tips:
*Try to identify and reduce stressful situations by being proactive in your planning of major activities.
* Promote fun within your organization. Have on the spot special recognition programs/actions. Be creative.
* Be proactive in recognizing and addressing stressful situations.
* Reduce anxiety in the workplace by keeping all informed on potential loss of jobs or changes in job related functions.
* Educate the workforce on the purposes and the availability of the Employee Assistance Program.
* Be aware of your dominant personality type and how it affects others.
* Interrupt stressful projects with mandatory breaks during the day.
*Find relaxation techniques that can be done comfortably in or around the workplace i.e. stretching exercises, meditation, walking and deep breathing.
*Place stress related informational literature in key places-break-room.
Implementation of these tips will empower you and your team in the effective reduction of work related stress.
